What is the Winter Cities Shake-Up?

Winter Cities Shake-Up is a conference for people who live in winter cities and want to improve their community's quality of life year-round, but especially in the winter. 

For three days in winter, international experts in many areas, as well as artists, comedians and civic leaders, will gather in Saskatoon, Canada to present findings and share experiences in one of three areas:

• Designing for Winter - Walkways, streets, buildings and public spaces don't have to become cold, windy and unattractive as soon as winter hits. Learn about the latest and best in urban design and planning to make our cities livable year-round.

• Operating in Winter - How can a city operate and be sustainable without things such as snow management, transportation or modern technology? Learn about the latest and best advancements in winter city operations.

• Active in Winter - How can we plan and design cities, and offer opportunities that make it easier to Go Play Outside? What types of activities and programming do people want? What makes for a great winter festival? How can we encourage more active winter transportation?

January 23-26, 2019 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. 

Who should attend the Winter Cities Shake-Up?

Anyone interested in winter urban life. Urban planners and designers, community members, architects, artists, entrepreneurs, government, business people, academics; this is an interdisciplinary conference that takes a holistic approach to all the great things winter has to offer. 

We've invited more than 400 guests from many different countries, and have speakers coming from Finland, Denmark, Japan, the United States and Canada. If you live in Saskatoon and want to take in just some of the conference, you can register for one or two days only.

Why is the City of Saskatoon hosting the Winter Cities Shake-Up?

Imagine living in a place that is world-renowned for celebrating its winter climate. A city where people enjoy and relish coming out to engage with each other in public spaces including and particularly in the darkest, cold days of winter. A city where streets, spaces and buildings are designed with a winter view point, where light is used to create warmth and luminescence during winter days, a place where snow is considered and treated as a valued resource. This is what the true vision of the 2019 Winter Cities Shake-Up is. It is the realization of that vision brought about by bringing together people from across the globe, who represent a wide variety of disciplines and backgrounds to discuss, explore and share best practices and to explore creative and innovative approaches for enhancing the quality of life in winter cities. And we are convinced that by engaging Saskatoon and Saskatchewan leaders in this process of dialogue and thinking that we will be best positioned to design and provide a vibrant and exciting city for our residents and tourists, and Saskatoon will truly Shine year round.
